Vechaar Utensils Museum Ahmedabad

Mr. Surendra  Patel, the man who thought otherwise, created this utensils museum named as VECHAAR which stands for Vishalla Environmental Center for Heritage of Art, Architecture and Research. The musuem is a treasure trove of sorts with utensils that have lived over decades and were collected from various nooks and corners of the country.


Managed by the VECHAAR Charitable Trust, the museum is a non-profit venture. It was set up to merely gather, maintain and appreciate the creative skills and brilliance of the craftsmen, and their labour of love and hardwork- the outstanding pieces of utensils. 

A utensils museum may sound like an amusing thought, however VECHAAR (Charitable Trust) came into existence very much in relation to Vishalla (a heritage village restaurant). After Vishalla was started in the year 1981, the interior designer and owner of Vishalla, Surendra Patel, went to the Saurashtra region of Gujarat looking for old utensils to give an erstwhile and ethnic touch to the interiors of the restaurant.

What he saw there moved him. The craftsmen were melting brass utensils so that they could sell it and make some money. The designer realized we were losing  our heritage and creative skills in the process. Later discussions with his friend and acquaintance  Jyontindra Jain, helped the realisation of the Vechaar Utensils museum. The museum functions as a public charitable trust, and donation in any form, including personal contribution of vessels to add to the museum's growth is whole-heartedly welcome.

Structure of Vechaar Utensils Museum

The museum maintains a village ambience.  A simple, muddy lane takes you to VECHAAR (Charitable Trust), and leads you to a large hut-like building that houses the museum. The architecture of the museum building is quadrangular in shape, using the mud plaster technique like in villages. 

To the centre of the museum are four small water bodies with a small temple of Lord Shiva in the centre. Also ‘Vechaar' unlike other conventional museums, where the items on display are cased, believes in the “barrier-free”exhibit of its amazing collection of over 2000 rare utensils.

One can find on display utensils of brass, copper, clay, terracotta and bronze. Utensils used for cooking, pots for water-storage, serving utensils, vessel for making butter milk, spoons, storage jars, rolling pins, steamers, cookers, casseroles, jugs, kettles, glasses and bowls, frying pans and woks, bottles and boxes, plates, spice-boxes, infants’ feeding cups, nut crackers, tiffin-boxes, knives and even tantric havan-kunds.

How to reach Vechaar Utensils Museum

By Road: Gujarat has a well connected road network. Ahmedabad is connected with all
major cities and towns by road. Prominent bus stops are located at Gitamandir and Paldi.
Regular bus services are available by Gujarat state transport buses (GSRTC) connects all
major cities of Gujarat to Ahmedabad. Private transport options are also available.

By Rail: The main railway station is located in Kalupur area and is connected to all major
cities of India.

By Air: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel airport, Ahmedabad is an international airport with
direct flights to most international hubs. The Domestic airport connects all major Indian
